Margaret Hicks - AIG Life of Canada article

Introduction - Margaret's story originally published April, 2003
We as a family, share our deepest fears and frustrations and hold nothing back from the reader.  We do not hide our feelings or insecurities. We are not ashamed or embarrassed by our plight, but rather take strength from knowing, others may benefit from our actions.

Since my Internet campaign to expose AIG's aggressive management style to be 'vicious and cruel' started 18 months ago, I still have the same level of energy for the cause that I had at the beginning.   E-mails still come in regularly that send chills up my spine and twist my stomach into knots.

The Internet and the power of Scoreboard Canada's website has exposed the corrupt practices of AIG Life Insurance of Canada. You might say, the Internet has leveled the playing field for us, in our battles for justice against AIG.

I have spent a lot of unproductive time with Lawyers, Employment Standards Act officers, The Human Rights Commission officers, and our Members of Parliament, only to discover that the penalties would be a drop in the bucket to AIG Life of Canada.  Their parent company, American International Group, boasts assets of over $600 billion.

AIG claim, in their statement of defamation against Scoreboard and myself, damages amounting to $500,000.00.   Any financial losses or difficulties they have recruiting employees, bad moral, and loss of business, is caused by what they did to Margaret and being exposed to those facts.

Under Canadian Common Law, truth is the only complete answer to a civil action of defamation. The law will not permit recovery of damages for a harm to a character which is not possessed. My defences are: justification, fair comment and the truth.

AIG's  filing a statement of claim against me are similar to trying to get out of a mess by using crazy glue, smoke and mirrors. The real problems they have, are caused by how they treated Margaret. Until they focus their efforts on compensating her for the way they treated her, they will continue to do irreparable harm to themselves.

Maybe someday, AIG will realize these articles are not going to stop.  I suggest they leave Canada now.  There are a lot of reputable Canadian Insurance Companies people can do business with and work for.  Sooner or later, if I have anything to say about it, every Canadian will find out what AIG is all about.

They should know by now, that I do not intimidate easily. If their lawyers cannot get the articles down after 18 months, then there must be a lot of truth to what is being written or, AIG should get new lawyers.  My battles with Blaney McMurtry (AIG's Lawyers) is another story for another time.

There are  a lot of other people and companies that have offered to host these pages, should anything stop me or Scoreboard from publishing the articles.  I am prepared for anything they can throw at us.

AIG, knew what they were doing to Margaret.  Many victims of AIG's employment practices have come forward with their stories.  I am convinced that, greed is their motivation and they know employees in the private sector have little or no protection against their ruthless tactics.

To some employees like Margaret, their employment practices can appear to be a real 'reign of terror.'  They seem to think they are above the law, as their actions would indicate.  They do not care who they hurt, as long as the Executives make big bucks and the rest of the employees are pushed to the limit.

Margaret worked in the mailroom, but she and all others employees deserved to be treated fairly, honestly and with decency.  At least that is what the laws call for.  AIG is learning the hard way that little people can fight back too.

In this brutally honest portrait you will discover how cruel and ruthless AIG can be. We tell it as it happened.  From the early stages when Margaret became ill, to the fraudulent tactics used to force her to quit her job. The conspiracy that AIG spear-headed to delay her disability benefits and the greatest challenge Margaret faces - her battle with major depression.
